La Spezia

The town of La Spezia is the second most populated city in the region is in Liguria and is the capital of the province. It is located a few kilometers from the border with Tuscany and is at the centre of a natural deep gulf which gives its name. This gulf is also known by the nickname of Gulf of Poets and is surrounded by a chain of hills, whose highest peak is Mount Parodi. The first transcription of the name seems to date back to 1256 in a document at Spezam, although in another document dated July 25, 1071 appears perhaps for the first time the name Spezia. In the country during the year held two festivals that are the historical Fair of St. Joseph and the Feast of the Sea. The first takes place every year on 19 March, the day which celebrates the patron of the city which lasts 3 days and the second that is the Feast of the Sea takes place every year, the first Sunday in August. The Feast of the Sea provides for the dispute of the Palio of the Gulf that is preceded, the day before, by a masked parade theme through the streets of the city centre, the whole event finally concludes Sunday evening with a fireworks display on the waters of Gulf.
